Guided Heritage Walk: Discover Cambridge’s industrial past

Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group presents a walking tour led by an expert guide.

Explore the former Cambridge gasworks (off Newmarket Road) and its impact on local society, economy and the environment. Featuring documentary sources (such as maps, photographs, company records and eyewitness reports), the tour will: explore the sights (and smells) of the former Cambridge gasworks, its operations, stories of its workers, evaluate its environmental impact, and invite participants to assess its legacy: past, present and future.

This tour will begin at the Cheddar Lane (upper) Gate at Cambridge Museum of Technology (on a step-free route around Cheddars Lane, Newmarket Road, River Lane and Riverside) will visit archaeological remains from what was the largest industrial complex in Cambridge: the University and Town Gas-Light Company. The tour will end at Cambridge Museum of Technology, home of Cambridge’s industrial heritage, where you will be able to explore the displays

Duration: approximately 80-minute walk followed by admission to Cambridge Museum of Technology.

Tour distance, including stopping points, 0.75 miles / 1 km.  There are no steps but some uneven surfaces and slopes.

Bring your walking shoes, a waterproof if rain is forecast and a water bottle.

The tour will run in all weathers with the exception of forecast thunderstorms or settled snow. Diversions may be necessary in the case of flooding.

This tour is recommended for ages 11+.

Public transport to meeting point:  

Bus Route 1 from Cambridge Station via the City centre. Jesus College or Westbrook Centre stops. 8/10 minute walk to starting point.

Bus Route 2 from Cambridge North Station. Jesus College or Hamilton Road stops. 8/10 minute walk to starting point.

Public transport from the Museum:

Bus Route 3 from Newmarket Road to Cambridge Station via the City Centre. River Lane stop. 8 minute walk from the Museum.

Bus Route 2 from Chesterton Road to Cambridge North Station.  Chesterton Road stop. 8 minute walk from the Museum.
